 Surveys & ProjectsSince its foundation in 2007 the European Butterflies Group (initially called European Interests Group) has concentrated its efforts on survey work often at the request of, or in association with local partners. These survey trips are generally self-funded by EBG volunteers and normally led by Committee members. Records from these trips are shared with local recorders and/or international recording platforms such as Observation.org, iNaturalist or eBMS Monitoring. EBG works in close cooperation with Butterfly Conservation Europe (BCE) who have tended to concentrate on European butterfly and moth monitoring and its expansion whilst EBG has concentrated on surveying for threatened species. The cooperation is exemplified by the production of the latest European butterflies Red List principally produced by BCE (with contributions from partners throughout Europe and from EBG). In addition to providing an updated summary of the conservation status of European butterflies, the Red List has identified further survey work required for the most threatened species, some of which studies may lend themselves to EBG’s participation and support. The map illustrates both the geographical spread and scope of surveys undertaken. In 2024 and 2025 a bursary was awarded to Mario Alamo del Olmo from the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid to study the Chazara prieuri populations of the Iberian Peninsula.
